The success of the Five Nights at Freddy’s series is something that was entirely unexpected. The original game became a YouTube phenomenon, with Let’s Players in particular enjoying the thrill of the title’s jump scares. Creator Scott Cawthon proved to be an extremely productive developer, pushing out both Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 3 in quick succession, selling impressively in spite of criticism of Cawthon and his series.
There was more to come, however, with Cawthon unveiling Five Nights at Freddy’s 4. Apparently the final chapter in the franchise, the game saw an initial release trailer and a launch date of August 8, with DLC set for Halloween 2015. However, Cawthon’s development speed once again proved too much for him, and the creator released the game several months early, catching Five Nights at Freddy’s fans off guard once more.
In spite of the game being released early, there was no news about the DLC being brought forward to match the main title’s launch. Now, Cawthon has given an update on the status of this Halloween additional content. The developer released a post on Five Night’s at Freddy’s 4’s official Steam page, giving away a few more details surrounding the content – as well as stating that the Halloween bonanza will not be DLC, but instead should be thought of as an “automatic update.”
The Halloween content will apparently update Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 to version 1.1, including “lots of goodies on the extras menu.” These extras will include a cheat menu and a challenge menu, as well as providing a “twist” on one of the title’s minigames that is set to give “a boost when playing challenge modes.” Cawthon also hinted that there may be a first look at a brand new game, although the developer reiterated that it would not be another Five Nights at Freddy’ssequel. Although the timescale may prove difficult, Cawthon wants to have “a playable portion” of the game available in time for the update.
Cawthon also revealed that the update will not unlock Five Nights at Freddy’s 4’s notorious locked box. Although many had suspected that the box would be unlocked through the Halloween content, it looks as though Cawthon is going to leave some mystery to the game’s plot, explaining that “some things are best left forgotten.” No player has been able to figure out the game’s story, and it appears the developer is going to leave the final pieces of the plot up to gamers to discover.

It remains to be seen whether this additional content will provide players with a fitting finale to the Five Nights at Freddy’s series. The current top theory is that Five Nights at Freddy’s 4 rounds off the story with the bite of ’87, and on the surface this seems like an obvious answer to the game’s plot. Cawthon’s recent post throws that theory into question, however. Who knows – perhaps the potential Five Nights at Freddy’s movie will finally answer fan questions.

Indie horror game Five Nights at Freddy's 4 will be getting an update on October 31, developer Scott Cawthon has revealed. Titled the Halloween update, Cawthon detailed the announcement on the game's Steam page.
The Halloween update will bring the game to version 1.1 and will include 'lots of goodies on the extras menu' for players who have beaten the sixth night in the game. These include a cheat menu, a challenge menu, and a 'twist on a familiar minigame that provides a boost when playing challenge modes.' The new content will be released as an automatic, free update.

The Halloween update will not be shedding any light on the mysterious box shown to players who survive the seventh night. Cawthon addressed the subject by saying, 'I've decided that maybe some things are best left forgotten, forever.'
Cawthon also expressed hopes to have 'a small playable portion' of a new game ready by October 31. He confirmed that the game would not be Five Nights at Freddy's 5, although he did not specify if it would be related to the FNAF universe.
You can also try to talk your way out of a tense situation, of course. 15 foot high walls are easily scaled, chairs can be mind-levitated away from doors, vents can be traversed as a cloud of smoke. Vampire the masquerade bloodlines 10 seduction. Because, yes, obviously, that’s still in there too. But because I’m not an aforementioned lame nerd, I’ll be picking seduction to do that every time.

Five Nights at Freddy's 4 was first released in July this year. It is the fourth Five Nights at Freddy's game to be launched in the span of a year. The original Five Nights at Freddy's was well-received in GameSpot's review, earning an eight out of ten for its dark humor, ability to invoke 'heart-pounding terror,' and story delivery. A movie adaptation of the game is also being made with Roy Lee (The Departed, The LEGO Movie) and Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg of KatzSmith Productions (the upcoming Beetlejuice sequel) signed on as producers.
