Windows 8.1
I'm playing in Windowed (Fullscreen) mode and I can't seem to figure out a quick way to minimize the game. I used to use mouse software (X-Mouse) to bind their minimize function to one of my mouse keys but I recently bought a Logitech G602 mouse with it's own software. I've been trying to figure out the proper way to bind a keyboard shortcut or macro to one of my mouse buttons to emulate the success I had with X-Mouse. Alt+Space+N does not work. Windows Key + Down Arrow does not work. Windows Key + D works - but minimizes ALL windows, which is not what I want. It feels like I'm missing something simple.. but I just don't have the patience to keep at it. Any help would be appreciated.
Alt-tab won't get you the desired results? I usually just do that to move away from the game.
Alt-Tab leaves the window up in the background. It also doesn't mute the game sound as it would when it's minimized.
Not too familiar with windows 8, but In windows 7 you can click a small rectangle on the side of the taskbar to minimize every open application. I think that and windows key + d is the best you'll get.
As for the sound, in system > sound you can untick sound in background and when you minimize/alt tab wow the sound mutes
I actually thought I had the background sound disabled - and tabbing out wasn't muting as expected. I appreciate you bringing that to my attention.
However, the button you mention is the same as pressing Windows+D, which is the key bind I currently have set on my mouse. It would be nice to retain the other open windows so that I do not have to make extra clicks to switch windows. That's why I asked if there was an alternative. Thanks for the reply, though.
On a side note, I re-installed X-Mouse Button Control.. and discovered that the new versions (all the way back from 2.7 to 2.2) do not perform the minimize function properly for WoW.. and I ended up having to find and install version 2.1 (the last version I used prior to switching to the Logitech Gaming Software) to attain the desired results when minimizing.
I just don't want to have unnecessary software installed so resolving this with a proper macro or shortcut would be preferable.
Quirk,
Windows Key + Down Arrow does not work. That is the Windows shortcut to minimize a single window. Have you changed the keybind for this? Or do you have anything running that would interrupt the shortcut? I believe the Aero Snap option can affect this. Check to make sure that isn't disabled. Control Panel > Ease of Access Center > Make the Mouse Easier to Use Then look under the subsection 'Make it easier to manage windows' and see if 'Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen' is checked. If it's checked, uncheck it and try the shortcut again. ______________________________ Sunday - Thursday, 7am - 4pm Pacific Time Rate me! Click here!
i just thought i would pipe in since i'm hanging around trying to actually into wow and desperately looking for a solution..
i use windows 8 x64, and i know exactly what you are talking about! i remember a time when i was in the game.. ;) i would use the windowed (fullscreen) mode while on my banker alt so that i could do other stuff in the background. well it works great!.. except for the very thing you are talking about. i have NEVER seen my desktop/background since, while in this mode, i guess it's a trade-off. it is frustrating but worth it in the end, but it was driving me nuts too at the time. i never did find a way to actually 'send it to the bottom and use the computer as you would normally, it just sort of is ALWAYS in the background. so you can go in a browser, and not really be affected, but say you need to open to windows and want to move some files in between: you'll have wow in all-it's moving glory in the background of those folders while you're moving files. lol so with windows key + D that works for you? not for me. even with everything minimized, as soon as i bring up another windows 'element', the wow environment is place in the background. sorry, but i haven't found a way around it. i guess i just sort of resigned myself as this is the cost of having it really run in the background. note: i'm using an NVidia card. so with windows key + D that works for you? not for me. even with everything minimized, as soon as i bring up another windows 'element', the wow environment is place in the background. I found that out after actually attempting to multitask. Windows+D did the trick in minimizing to desktop.. but, like you said, any actions taken will bring WoW back up. So that isn't going to work.

Then look under the subsection 'Make it easier to manage windows' and see if 'Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen' is checked. If it's checked, uncheck it and try the shortcut again.Unchecked. Windows + Down works outside of WoW just fine. Sometimes it requires a double-press (first it brings a fullscreen window down to a smaller size, then minimizes) but it does work. It also works fine when I have WoW in windowed (non-fullscreen mode) but when I'm in Windowed (Fullscreen) it doesn't work.
Running Fullscreen mode does not yield the Windows+D issue that Windowed (Fullscreen) encounters, and it allows for the use of Alt-Esc as a minimizing shortcut. Problem with this is that I do not get to see the taskbar window when I mouse over WoW (handy for keeping tabs on on-screen activity like a raid invite or ready check). Also, I've never had good luck with multitasking out of fullscreen. The constant minimizing tends to make things unstable.
Not to necro the thread, but it seems like no one conclusively said this but..
If you are in Windowed Mode (Fullscreen), wow will not be able to minimize. Yes, you can bring up other apps, see start menu, etc, but wow will always be there, covering the desktop. Which fine for most people I guess, but if you want to use the desktop space while wow is running in this mode, you simply can't For people who keep saying alt-tab, or use Windows-Down, you are not in the mode we are talking about. Alt tab will bring you to other apps, and Windows-Down work for anything else, but wow in this mode. One solution is to play in windowed mode, maximize it, and use the borderless windowed mode hack in here (http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/4768478327). but there doesn't seem to be any other way to do this.
Cumbersome, but here is how:
1. Open task manager (right click the taskbar and click 'Start Task Manger') 2. In the application list, right-click WoW and choose 'Minimize' Hopefully this helps others arriving here from a web search.
For anyone not finding the results they are looking for a found a easy alternative to alt'ing out or doing any other use. ((This is a keybind you can press the first time you use it it small screens wow. the next time it fullscreens it again.)) This is a useful alternative to going completely out of the way to do something.
a.k.a. Fullscreen on/off ~~please past this into a macro~~ /script SetCVar('gxWindow', 1 - GetCVar('gxWindow')); RestartGx(); Not to necro the thread, but it seems like no one conclusively said this but.. Completely not true. I've been playing the game for years in windowed(full) and no matter my OS, I've always been able to hit only the windows key or alt tab, alt esc etc and have it minimize the entire game so it isn't displayed in the background. Recently the 7.1 MESS that they introduced has completely !@#$%ered my WHOLE game and a tech I had on the phone the other day told me to try running the game as admin on my PC and since doing so now I too can't minimize anymore. Thank you blizzard tech! When things are bad you guys always have the power to make them worse. -.- And yeah, I went back and switched it back but it still didn't make any difference. Oh and btw miss fancy blizz tech, no that didn't fix the multiple DC's, the ingame 'abort Xfer instance not found's OR the random dismounting while on a flight path. All ya did was add another nail to the coffin of WoW for me.

Is there any way to minimize Wasteland to the desktop while playing? Alt-Tab doesn't work, and Alt-Enter only makes it a window that keeps your mouse pointer within it.
I'm trying to figure out how to be able to reference the 'Wasteland Paragraphs' PDF while playing. How is everyone doing that? Are you just printing it out?

When windowed with Alt-Enter you should be able to Alt-Tab. If it keeps the mouse captured press CTRL-F10.I'm trying to figure out how to be able to reference the 'Wasteland Paragraphs' PDF while playing. How is everyone doing that? Ctrl+F10 will not work because they have overridden most of the standard DOSBox keymap in order to allow you to use the original Wasteland macro recording/playback functionality.
With the new update, however, you may be able to set autolock=false in wl.conf to prevent the mouse from locking to the window in windowed mode. Someone else also mentioned that ctrl+alt+tab seems to work. I like this better than the alt+enter twice or ctrl+alt+del methods I was using before.

Thanks for the tips. I didn't realize that I could click on the book icon.

CTR+ALT+TAB will work instead of ALT+TAB. If you do it from full screen and switch back, it look weird, but pressing ALT+ENTER will return to full screen. It works best to ALT+ENTER first, then CTRL+ALT+TAB to release the mouse.

The updated version that was recently released now allows you to tweak the underlying DOSBox config. I was able to set capture=false to allow use of the mouse in windowed mode without it automatically locking the cursor to the game window.
This means that, while alt+tab still doesn't work, I can simply click outside of the game window to de-focus or minimize it.
